Microcar History:
Micro Cars was founded in 1995 in Peliyagoda, Sri Lanka. Since then, they have been producing the Micro 800 mini-car, the Micro MPV Junior van, and the Micro Trend hatchback. The ‘MICRO’ is designed, developed and prototyped to be manufactured locally with at least 60% of local content. The prototype was prepared in 1999 with the running chassis, making its debut run in December. The body was modeled in styling clay and then transferred to composite for final analysis in 2000.Its first car was legally registered only in 2003 after a lengthy battle with the motor car registration department of the country. The Micro car uses a lot of composite materials which the company says makes for a more flexible production process. With the achievement and recognition MICRO CARS LTD gained in the transport industry, the government of Sri Lanka contracted with MICRO CARS LTD to design, prototype and manufacture the “Lanka Econo Rail”. Centrex recently signed an Agreement to represent the Micro Cars manufacturing system to other nations seeking to establish a locally-run and operated car assembly company. The Agreement with Micro Cars also gives Centrex an option to acquire up to 40% interest in Micro Cars. Centrex has been asked to help support Micro Cars" fulfillment of this request from the Sri Lankan Air Force by looking into possible financing arrangements through US entities. At present Micro Car company is assembling SUVs in Sri Lanka collaborated with SsangYong motors Korea. The vehicles are the SsangYong Kyron, SsangYong Actyon and Ssangyong Rexton, all powered by Mercedes-Benz engines.

Micro is the first car company from Sri Lanka. Its designs are well suited for this country, where cars are frequently considered luxury accessories. The first Micro was made in mid-2001. The board of Investment provided state support for the car project.

The company’s models include; Micro Econo, Micro MPV Junior, Micro Trend, Micro Privilege. Developed by Dr. Lawrence Perera after years of planning research and development, the Micro Car is a unique vehicle specifically designed to be manufactured under low cost production methods: The car is produced with a reinforced composite body and galvanized chassis. Composite body manufacturing requires no expensive high tech machinery or robotics. Chassis are also hand made and coated with galvanize to give a warranty of 15 years. The manufacturing process is simplified which is semi manual but every car meets international standards for quality and safety. “MicroCars” is a four door city car. with a 970cc, 4 cylinder, 4 stroke MPFI water cooled engine and 5 speed manual transmission which averages between 15 - 16kms per Ltr making this car economical in terms of fuel consumption.OEM quality components such as Engines, Transmissions, Steering mechanisms, axels, breaking systems, suspension systems are used for the manufacturing of the Micro car. Each car is attractively designed with ergonomic seats, sitting areas and dashboards. Available options include air conditioning, central locking, Electric windows, alloy wheels, customized interior, exclusive customized exterior paint and sound systems. The car can be manufactured in left/right hand drive and EURO II versions.
